China is getting a bad rep as the birthplace of the novel Covid-19 virus. You know what else originated in China? Peaches. The peach is the most widely grown stone fruit. It is native to China and was introduced to Europe 2,000 years ago. In Canada, they have been an important fruit in Ontario since the 1880s and British Columbia since 1890s.
Peaches grow on trees (3-5 m tall with long, narrow, pointed leaves; single, pink flowers; and fuzzy fruits.
Fun fact: non- fuzzy peaches are called nectarines!
Peaches are sensitive, okay. There is an expression ‘bruise like a peach’ which means bruises easily. They are also least cold-hardy of stone fruits (they may be injured or killed by winter temperatures below -23°C)
Peaches are more than sexy emojis. Peaches are rich in many vitamins, They’re easily incorporated into a variety of dishes (salads, wraps, stir frys, tacos, desserts, etc…) and may offer impressive health benefits, including healthier skin, fewer allergy symptoms, and improved digestion and heart health.
